![]() Kirkus Reviews found that "Shannon's story is a good poke in the eye of conformity-imaginative, vibrant, and at times good and spooky-and his emphatic, vivid artwork keeps perfect pace with the tale." A review by Sandra L. Students are told to make signs for the cafeteria promoting healthy eating because like Camilla, there are some foods that students might be afraid to eat with their friends. Īnother approach to teaching A Bad Case of Stripes is using it to encourage students to eat their vegetables and to be brave about eating healthily. These activities focus on understanding Camilla’s emotions and addressing the issue of bullying. Online games about bullying and an exercise creating a hypothetical problem and solutions were also included in the lesson plan. One teacher from Comber, Ontario, Lisa Babula, incorporated a read-aloud, journal reflections, and discussion in literature response groups into three 40-minute class periods. Ī Bad Case of Stripes has also been used in classrooms to prevent bullying. For the students, this participation includes finding ways they connect to Camilla, organizing book details “into a story circle visual structure,” and creating episode analysis charts addressing Camilla’s problem, response, actions, and outcome. To increase student’s participation level, she incorporates both class-wide and small-group discussion and activities over many classes. Sawyer uses comprehension instruction with her third-graders to teach A Bad Case of Stripes. Sawyer, Shannon’s story encourages students to consider their own experiences to develop a personal connection. A 2007 online poll, the National Education Association listed the book as one of its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children." Īccording to an elementary school teacher in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Donna M. A 2004 study found that it was a common read-aloud book for fourth-graders in schools in San Diego County, California. The reading highlighted the book’s theme of teaching “children to be themselves and to respect those who may be different.” Pedagogy Ī Bad Case of Stripes is popular in the curricula of many elementary schools. Camilla then learns about herself and her surroundings through her “nightmare metamorphosis.” By the end of the book, Camilla “regains her identity when she is true to herself.” In 2018, West Virginia First Lady, Cathy Justice, read this book to young children in honor of the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. In the beginning of the book, Camilla conforms to peer pressure, which is shown through her chameleon-like trait of blending into her surroundings. A Bad Case of Stripes teaches a lesson about the importance of being one's true self through a lima bean metaphor. She enjoys being different and never has stripes again.Ī Bad Case of Stripes discusses ethics and metaphysics, by highlighting self-perception, identity, and bullying. Camilla is successfully reverted to a human and continues to eat lima beans although her friends consider her strange for liking them (and for her bow being covered in stripes), she doesn't even care a bit. Camilla is afraid to admit her willingness to eat them at first, but after realizing that this could be her only hope of being cured, she allows the old woman to feed her them. Finally, she melts and merges into her room after an environmental therapist tells her to “become one with the room”.įinally, an old lady tells her to eat some lima beans. ![]() She even has viruses, bacteria, and fungus colonies grow on her body after the community's expert scientists discuss these as a possible cause to her situation while examining her. But when she does the next day, most of the other children tease her and some of the other children call out colors and patterns which cause the colors on her skin to shift around. Bumble, determines that Camilla is well enough to attend school tomorrow. On the first day of school, she wakes up to discover thick, solid-colored stripes all over her body. However, she doesn't want to eat them because her friends dislike them and Camilla wants to fit in. The main character is a girl named Camilla Cream who secretly loves lima beans.

HE-Transformer effectively adds an abstraction layer that can be applied to neural networks on open source frameworks such as Google’s TensorFlow, Facebook’s PyTorch, and MXNet. It generates an encrypted result that, when decrypted, exactly matches the result of operations that would have been performed on unencrypted text. The “HE” in HE-Transformer is short for “homomorphic encryption,” a form of cryptography that enables computation on ciphertexts - plaintext (file contents) encrypted using an algorithm. At a high level, HE-Transformer is an nGraph backend based on Microsoft Research’s Simple Encrypted Arithmetic Library ( SEAL) that allows AI models to operate on encrypted data. Intel is cognizant of the trend toward privacy-preserving AI training and inferencing, said Singer, who pointed to the open-sourcing late last year of HE-Transformer as an important first step. DevCloud offers scalable storage and compute resources and enables developers to remotely test, optimize, and validate models against hardware, such as mini-PCIe development boards from manufacturers like Aaeon Technologies. Many of these suites run in Intel’s AI DevCloud, a cloud-hosted AI model training and inferencing platform powered by Xeon Scalable processors. They’re in the same family as Intel’s Movidius Neural Compute API, which aims to simplify app development in programming languages like C, C++, and Python. ![]() Singer said OpenVINO is intended to complement Intel’s Computer Vision software development kit (SDK), which combines video processing, computer vision, machine learning, and pipeline optimization into a single package, with Movidius Neural Compute SDK, which includes a set of software to compile, profile, and check machine learning models. It works with traditional CPUs or chips specially made for inferencing (the point in time at which a trained AI model makes predictions) like FPGAs, and it has already been deployed by companies such as GE Healthcare for medical imaging and Dahua for smart city services. Spring 2018 saw the launch of OpenVINO (Open Visual Inference & Neural Network Optimization), a toolset for AI edge computing development that packs pretrained AI models for object detection, facial recognition, and object tracking. There’s also Coach, a reinforcement learning framework that lets users embed AI agents in training environments targeting robotics and self-driving vehicle scenarios. It now offers its neural network distiller library, which can be used to strip away bits of AI models irrelevant to a target task in order to shrink the size of these models. ![]() Singer noted that these are not the only toolkits Intel has open-sourced. And in May, the company’s newly formed AI Lab made freely available a cross-platform library for natural language processing - NLP Architect - designed to imbue and benchmark conversational assistants with name entity recognition, intent extraction, and semantic parsing. Around the same time, Intel took the wraps off One API, a suite of tools for mapping compute engines to a range of processors, graphics chips, FPGAs, and other accelerators. Last April, the company announced it would open-source nGraph, a neural network model compiler that optimizes assembly code across multiple processor architectures. That’s why Intel has taken care not to neglect the software ecosystem piece of the AI puzzle, he said. ![]() Hardware is nothing if it can’t be easily developed against, Singer rightly pointed out. Join today’s leading executives at the Low-Code/No-Code Summit virtually on November 9. Last August, Intel snatched up Vertex.ai, a startup developing a platform-agnostic AI model suite. Intel bought field-programmable gate array (FPGA) manufacturer Altera in 2015 and a year later acquired Nervana, filling out its hardware platform offerings and setting the stage for an entirely new generation of AI accelerator chipsets. Still, increased competition from the likes of incumbents Nvidia, Qualcomm, Marvell, and AMD startups like Hailo Technologies, Graphcore, Wave Computing, Esperanto, and Quadric and even Amazon threaten to slow Intel’s gains, which is why the company isn’t resting on its laurels. Putting this into perspective, its data-centric revenues now constitute around half of all business across all divisions, up from around a third five years ago. The Santa Clara company’s AI chip segments notched $1 billion in revenue last year, and Intel expects the market opportunity to grow 30% annually from $2.5 billion in 2017 to $10 billion by 2022. The wave amplitude of the Rayleigh wave diminishes exponentially with depth. Note 2 : the propagation velocity of a Rayleigh wave is slightly less than that of a shear wave in the solid. Note 1 : a maximum particle displacement away from this initially undisturbed surface the motion of the particle is opposite to that of the wave. Rayleigh Wave Definition (IEC 801-23-12) surface wave associated with the free boundary of a solid or liquid such that a surface particle describes an ellipse whose major axis is normal to the surface, and whose centre is situated on the initially undisturbed surface Sound Waves related terms - listed alphabeticallyĪntinodes, the maximum amplitude of a sound wave, occurring halfway between two equally spaced nodes (zeros), see also standing waves. Sound Wavelengths range from more than 17 metres to less than 17 millimeters, between the peaks ( antinodes), so react differently with 'objects' in their paths, resulting in complex sound fields. In the special case of standing waves these node(s) would be stationary. Observe also the nodes and antinodes, found in all waves as they move along the rope. In both cases the rope particles are involved but without any net particle movement. You can simulate sound waves while holding a length of rope and moving your hand(s) up and down or side-to-side, demonstrating the two main directions in which sound wave motion occurs, longitudinal and transverse. Sound Waves in air are longitudinal waves. Remember the equation: speed = frequency x wavelength, so if the wavelength decreases but speed stays the same, then the frequency must increase.Sound Waves Definition (IEC 801-23-01) disturbance propagated at a definite velocity in a medium in such a manner that at any point in the medium the quantity serving as the measure of disturbance is a function of the time, while at any instant the same quantity at a point is a function of the co-ordinates of the point. The change in wavelengths result in a change in frequency. As the ambulance moves, it approaches the sound waves ahead of it, causing the wavefronts to become closer together (they now have a shorter wavelength) while the wavefronts behind the vehicle become more spread out (they now have a longer wavelength). This happens because the sound waves have a constant wave speed. You will have experienced the Doppler Effect when an ambulance or police car with its siren blaring passes you - the pitch of the siren sounds higher when it comes towards us and lower when it is travelling away from us. It appears as if the frequency of the wave changes as the source moves past you. ![]() The Doppler Effect occurs when a wave is emitted from a moving source. In the diagram illustrating the Doppler Effect below, the wavefronts are represented as black circles. The distance between each wavefront is equal to one wavelength. ![]() ![]() The next wavefront would be drawn at the next peak. A ‘ wavefront’ is an imaginary line that is drawn across the peaks of the different waves. When a source emits a wave, it’s not just an individual wave which is emitted but several that are travelling in the same direction. You’ll learn more about EM waves on the next page. All EM waves travel the same speed through a vacuum but they have different wavelengths and frequencies. There are seven different types of EM waves which form are organised along a spectrum - we call this the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike sound waves, they do not require particles to carry the vibrations which means they are able to travel through a vacuum. Electromagnetic wavesĮlectromagnetic (EM) waves are transverse waves, which means the vibrations move up and down (at right angles) to the direction of wave travel. Sound waves require particles to carry the vibrations, which means they cannot travel through a vacuum (as there are no particles). The speed of sound depends on the medium through which it is travelling, for example, sound waves travel over four times faster in water compared to air. the vibrations are parallel to the direction of wave travel). Sound waves are longitudinal waves, which means they travel through vibrations moving back and forth (i.e. |
